Synopsis

The most obvious and notable common denominator of Caroline Christies' paintings is the repeated use of the circle. Circles float, spin, cluster, suspend and drop with in and out of the canvases - sometimes one lone or isolated shape and sometimes crowded, bustling and linked.

The organic nature of circles and their distinct presence around us leads the audience to inquire what this timeless symbol means in the context of these painterly compositions. To the artist the circle represents the Individual or aspects thereof - whole and/or fragmented forms on and within the canvas. Exploring the self in relation to the matrix in which we exist. The response these varying moments have on the viewer is provocative and subjective.

Caroline Christie works in a bold and uninhibited fashion. Her technique explores process combined with considered line and markings with paint on canvas. The artist’s technique appears loose and free; comprising of multiple layering of pigments, paints and stains. Utilizing mixed media and the varying reactions these substances have on each other, the artist parodies the spontaneous complexities of Life.

I have become fascinated with ‘alchemy’ and the aspect of my work that is process driven – usually working flat, using gravity, mixing and chemical reactions to create spontaneous effects, creating new and unexpected substances. Once these unique happenings are revealed, I consider my next moves and interaction with the painting. Often the accidents are my most beautiful discoveries - rather like life sometimes.’ Caroline Christie.

The expressionistic nature of the work is subjective however what the artist is exploring is to what extent her experiences are common. Because the environments and circles are delivered as an abstract expression of emotional experiences the viewer is invited to transpose their life’s experiences on to the work. These abstractions become a vehicle to a visual landscape of awareness the viewer may penetrate and access.
